What a wonderful Tribute

I got this from my husband at work, and definitely thought it was worthwhile to pass on!

Here SHE is, the USS New York, made from the World Trade Center!

USS New York

It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center.

It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept. 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. "It was a
spiritual moment for everybody there."

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up." "It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back."

The ship's motto? "Never Forget"

I actually find myself exhaustingly sad over the use of the steel for a warship. Perhaps to make a Red Cross floating hospital or as the foundation for a new building in the footings of the old but not as a war ship. War hurts-even the word hurts. I would have made a different choice to build with. Lets make some peace instead.

Jen...this is a great picture and statement. Something good has to come from 9/11 even if it means more "tools" to battle with. My son is now in the Navy and is in the Gulf, everyday I pray for peace and every one of our troops to come home safe and sound. I don't agree with a lot of what is happening but I am so very proud of my son and the job that ALL of them are doing. Especially today I am proud to be an American, and I get more choked up when I hear the National Anthem. We must not forget all the men and women who are doing their part-regardless of our personal feelings. Happy July 4th!! Glad you are feeling better and thanks again for hosting the Bella swap-I luv them ALL!!

Wow! I didn't expect the feelings
that came out of me when I read your blog. And it has nothing to do with American pride because I am a Canadian but tears flowed. I can well imagine the reverence the workers felt because that is how it hit me too. I have to agree that I don't agree with the whole situation, but I am proud of our Canadian boys doing what they think is right. And my wish is that
they continue their quest and come home safely.

Thanks for sharing this. I did not know they were re-using the steel. What a fantastic idea.
